How to study Units & Measurements for JEE

Units & Measurements is a fundamental physics topic for the JEE Examination. This topic is also called “Physical World & Measurements” in some textbooks. It is usually the first topic taught in Class 11 Physics. This topic is also one of the easiest topics for JEE Physics.

Weightage & Importance

You can expect 2 or 3 questions from Units & measurements in the JEE Exam. However, the topic is fundamental as units & measurements are used in all topics of Physics & Physical Chemistry. Thus, this topic is one of the first topics a JEE aspirant should study and prepare.

Syllabus & Topics

As per the NTA website, the topics under Units & Measurements are:

Units of measurements, System of Units, S I Units, fundamental and derived units, least count, significant figures, Errors in measurements, Dimensions of Physics quantities, dimensional analysis, and its applications.

How to study Units & Measurements?

Let us simplify and organise the above topics to understand how to prepare this chapter for JEE.

Here is a simplified view of the topics:

Theory Topics:

  • Introduction to Physics, Science & Technology
  • Units & Measurements Basics: SI Units, Fundamental & Derived Units, Length, Mass, Time measurements
  • Measurements: Accuracy & Precision, Errors in Measurements, Significant Figures
  • Dimensional Analysis

Numerical Questions:

The Theory topics can be studied easily through the NCERT textbook (ebook available online) alone. Once you have studied and understood theory topics, you can move to numerical questions. For the JEE Examination, numerical questions are very important and most likely numerical questions will be asked in the JEE Examination.

The numerical topics are not very difficult and can be studied using our free online learning tools. Click on the links above to access these tools.
